DAY 2 : Ginga no Taki and Ryusei no Taki -> Kurodake Ropeway -> Sounkyo Ice Festival -> Hotel
Ginga no Taki and Ryusei no Taki
Ginga no Taki (Milky Way Falls) and Ryusei no Taki (Shooting Star Falls) are located approximately 3km from Sounkyo village centre. Both waterfalls can be viewed from a large parking lot across the river or from a small observation deck that can be reached via a steep walking trail in about 15-20 minutes from the parking lot outside of winter. During winter time you can also see both waterfall frozen
Kurodake Ropeway
The Kurodake Ropeway provides visitors easy access into the higher parts of Daisetsuzan National Park.
Sounkyo Ice Festival
From late January to late March Sounkyo village holds the Sounkyo Ice Waterfall Festival (Sounkyo Onsen Hyobaku Matsuri), featuring large, multi-story ice and snow structures with interior caverns and maze-like tunnels running through them. Although the layout of the festival changes from year to year, it usually includes large snow domes, ice sculptures, a snow tubing run (small fee required to rent tubes) and an event stage.

DAY 3 : Abashiri Drift Ice Cruise -> Abashiri Prison Museum -> Hotel
Abashiri Drift Ice Cruise
You can see the sea of Okhotsk covered with drifting sea ice in winter time. The sea ice typically reaches the coast around Abashiri in mid to late January and disappears again by late March to mid April. The best time to view it is usually around the second half of February.

DAY 4 : Shiretoko Five Lakes -> See Swan in Lake Kussharo -> Lake Kussharo -> Hotel
Shiretoko Five Lakes
The Shiretoko Five Lakes (知床五湖, Shiretoko Goko) are a set of five small lakes formed long ago by the eruption of nearby Mount Io and fed by underground springs. Shiretoko Five Lakes offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and wilderness. There is also an 800 meter long, wooden elevated boardwalk, which allows visitors to enjoy views of the lake, the Sea of Okhotsk and the surrounding mountains without damaging the fragile ecosystem. The boardwalk is free to use, wheelchair accessible and open for the entire season (late April to late November).
See Swan in Lake Kussharo
Lake Kussharo is known for the swans that gather there during winter time. The surface of the lake freezes during the winter. However, a hot spring is gushing out from the lakeside. For this reason, the edge of the lake does not freeze, and becomes a bath exclusively for swans.
