Takayama is famous for its old town with beautifully preserved buildings from Edo Period. Sannomachi Street is the famous street in Takayama old town with many old homes, shops, coffee houses and sake breweries. Some of them have been in business for centuries. Takayama is also famous for its traditional sake and crafts.

Shirakawa-go is a recently developed tourist spot close to Takayama. Shirakawago is famous for its traditional village farmhouse.

Ogimachi is the main attraction and the largest village in Shirakawago. Ogimachi village is declared as UNESCO world heritage site, and is home to several well preserved farmhouses. Some of the farmhouses are more than 250 years old. The farmhouses are designed with amazing structures that withstand the harsh winters. These farmhouses are best seen when covered in snow
