DESCRIPTION
Higashiyama District is one of Kyoto’s best-preserved historical areas, offering visitors a glimpse into the charm of old Japan. Walking through Higashiyama feels like traveling back in time, surrounded by traditional wooden buildings, narrow lanes, and serene temples.
This area is perfect for experiencing the atmosphere of classic Kyoto, especially along the scenic route between Kiyomizudera Temple and Yasaka Shrine. Along the way, you’ll find many shops and restaurants selling Japanese souvenirs, local sweets, and traditional crafts. Renting a yukata or kimono to stroll around is also a popular activity among visitors.
Higashiyama District is quite large, filled with temples, shrines, and preserved architecture. The most popular walking route stretches about 2 kilometers from Yasaka Shrine to Kiyomizudera Temple and takes roughly 30 minutes to explore on foot.
Access
Take bus number 100 or 206 in direction of Kiyomizudera from Kyoto Station. Get off at Gojozaka bus stop(10 minutes, ¥230 one way) or Gion bus stop(15 minutes, ¥230 yen).
By Car

Hours & Fees
The shops and restaurants here usually open around 9 or 10 am and close around 5 or 6 pm except during Hanataro festival where the whole area is being lighted up.
