Shuri Castle remains one of the must-visit attractions in Okinawa.

DESCRIPTION

Shuri Castle (首里城) is a historic castle located in Naha City, Okinawa, and was once the political and cultural center of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled Okinawa for several centuries.

Originally built around the 14th century, Shuri Castle played an important role in diplomacy and trade between Okinawa, China, Japan, and other Asian countries. Because of these international influences, the castle features a unique architectural style that differs from traditional Japanese castles.

The castle is especially famous for its striking red main hall (Seiden), decorative gates, stone walls, and traditional Ryukyu designs. The surrounding castle grounds also offer beautiful views overlooking Naha City.

Shuri Castle was designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.”

In October 2019, the main hall and several structures were heavily damaged by a large fire. Reconstruction efforts are currently ongoing, and visitors can observe parts of the restoration process while exploring the remaining gates, walls, and surrounding historical areas.

Despite the fire damage, Shuri Castle remains one of Okinawa’s most symbolic cultural sites and an excellent place to learn about Ryukyu history and Okinawan heritage.
