SUMMARY
Shirahige Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Hokkaido, famous for its unique appearance as streams of water flow through cracks in a cliff into the vivid blue waters of the Biei River. Located near Shirogane Onsen, it is one of the most popular attractions in the Biei area.

DESCRIPTION

Shirahige Falls is located in the Shirogane Onsen area of Biei and is one of the few waterfalls in Japan where water flows directly from underground through cracks in a cliff face.

The waterfall drops approximately 30 meters into the beautiful blue waters of the Biei River. Because the water emerges from multiple points along the cliff, the cascading streams resemble a white beard, which inspired the waterfall's name.

One of the most striking features of Shirahige Falls is the contrast between the white flowing water and the bright blue river below. The vivid blue color is caused by natural minerals dissolved in the water, similar to the nearby Shirogane Blue Pond.

The scenery changes dramatically throughout the seasons. Visitors can enjoy fresh greenery in spring and summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and spectacular snow-covered landscapes during winter.

At night during the winter season, the waterfall is often illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere that attracts photographers from across Japan.

Shirahige Falls is located only a few minutes from Shirogane Blue Pond, making it easy to visit both attractions on the same trip.
