SUMMARY
Noboribetsu Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, is one of Hokkaido's most famous natural attractions. Known for its dramatic volcanic landscape, steaming vents, bubbling hot springs, and sulfurous atmosphere, it serves as the primary source of the hot spring waters that make Noboribetsu Onsen famous throughout Japan.
DESCRIPTION
Noboribetsu Jigokudani is a volcanic crater formed by past eruptions of Mount Hiyori. Covering an area of approximately 11 hectares, the valley is filled with steaming vents, sulfur springs, and bubbling pools that create an otherworldly landscape.
Visitors can walk along well-maintained boardwalks and observation paths to view the geothermal activity up close. The constantly rising steam and rugged terrain create a scene reminiscent of a "hellish" landscape, which inspired the valley's name.
One of the most popular walking routes leads to Oyunuma, a sulfurous hot spring pond, and the nearby Oyunuma River Natural Footbath, where visitors can soak their feet in naturally warm flowing water.
The valley changes throughout the seasons, offering lush greenery in summer, colorful autumn foliage, snow-covered scenery in winter, and fresh mountain air in spring.
Located just a short walk from the Noboribetsu Onsen town, Jigokudani is often combined with a relaxing hot spring experience, making it one of the highlights of southern Hokkaido.
