DESCRIPTION
Shirogane Blue Pond is located in the Shirogane Onsen area of Biei and was created accidentally as part of a flood-control project designed to protect nearby towns from volcanic mudflows originating from Mount Tokachi.
The pond's distinctive blue color is caused by natural minerals dissolved in the water, particularly aluminum hydroxide particles that reflect sunlight. Depending on the weather, season, and time of day, the water can appear bright blue, emerald blue, or turquoise.
One of the most iconic features of the pond is the collection of dead larch trees standing in the water, creating a surreal and photogenic landscape. The scenery changes throughout the year, from vibrant green surroundings in summer to colorful autumn leaves and snow-covered landscapes in winter.
During the winter season, special illuminations are sometimes held, transforming the pond into a magical nighttime attraction.
