SUMMARY
Takayama Old Town is one of Japan's best-preserved historical districts, featuring traditional wooden merchant houses, sake breweries, and charming streets dating back to the Edo Period. Often called "Little Kyoto of the Hida Region," it offers visitors a glimpse into old Japan.

DESCRIPTION

Takayama Old Town is located in the heart of Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture. The district developed as a prosperous merchant town during the Edo Period and has preserved much of its original appearance for centuries.

The most famous area is Sanmachi Suji, a collection of beautifully preserved streets lined with traditional wooden buildings. Many of these structures now house cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops, museums, and sake breweries.

Visitors can sample locally brewed sake, explore artisan workshops, and purchase regional specialties such as Hida beef products, crafts, and traditional sweets.

The area is especially atmospheric in the early morning and evening when crowds are smaller and the historic streets become even more picturesque.

Several cultural attractions are located nearby, including Takayama Jinya, morning markets, temples, and museums, making the Old Town an excellent starting point for exploring the city.

Throughout the year, Takayama hosts traditional festivals that further enhance the historic atmosphere, particularly the famous Takayama Festival, considered one of Japan's most beautiful festivals.
