DESCRIPTION
Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is a unique wildlife attraction in the mountains of Yamanouchi, Nagano, famous for its Japanese macaques, often known as the “snow monkeys.” During the colder months, the monkeys frequently gather around the natural hot spring in the park, creating an unforgettable winter scene.
Visitors can walk along a forest trail to reach the viewing area and observe the monkeys in their natural surroundings. The journey through the peaceful forest is also part of the experience, particularly during winter when the area is covered with snow.
The park is located close to Yudanaka Onsen, Shibu Onsen, and Shiga Kogen, making it an excellent sightseeing stop when traveling from Tokyo toward the Kita-Shiga ski resorts. It can also be combined with a skiing trip, allowing travelers to enjoy both the famous snow monkeys and the surrounding mountain scenery in the same journey.

Access
From Yudanaka Station, take a local bus to the Snow Monkey Park bus stop, followed by approximately a 30–40 minute walk along a forest trail to the park entrance. By private car, visitors can drive to the nearby parking areas and continue on foot along the walking trail. During winter, suitable footwear is recommended as the trail can be snowy and slippery.
