DESCRIPTION
Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is a major Shinto shrine located in southern Kyoto. It is world-famous for its thousands of torii gates, which form iconic red tunnels leading up to the sacred Mount Inari (233 meters above sea level).
The shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, and foxes are considered Inari’s messengers. As a result, visitors will see numerous fox statues scattered throughout the shrine grounds.
At the back of the main shrine, you’ll find the entrance to the famous Senbon Torii (thousands of torii gates). Each gate is typically sponsored by an individual or company, with the donor’s name engraved on the gate.
For hiking enthusiasts, it is possible to walk the torii gate trail all the way up Mount Inari. The full round-trip hike generally takes about 2–3 hours, offering both a spiritual and scenic experience.
