DESCRIPTION
Mount Takao is the nearest mountain getaway from central Tokyo, popular among locals and tourists for its natural beauty and easy accessibility. There are several well-marked hiking trails leading to the summit, with Trail No. 1 being the most popular — wide, mostly paved, and offering scenic views along the way. Other trails are narrower, unpaved, and quieter, ideal for those who prefer a more natural hiking experience.
The hike to the top of Mount Takao takes around 90 minutes from the base. For those who prefer a more relaxing journey, a cable car or chair lift is available to take visitors halfway up the mountain.
Along the trail, you will come across several temples, with Yakuo-in Temple being the most famous and spiritually significant.
The best time to visit Mount Takao is around mid-November, when the autumn leaves turn brilliant shades of red and yellow. During this season, Mount Takao becomes one of Tokyo’s most crowded spots, especially on weekends and public holidays.
