DESCRIPTION
Owakudani (大涌谷) is a volcanic valley located in the Hakone area and was formed during the last eruption of Mount Hakone approximately 3,000 years ago. Today, it has become one of the most popular sightseeing destinations in Hakone and attracts visitors from around the world.
Visitors can reach Owakudani by taking the famous Hakone Ropeway, which connects Togendai, Owakudani, and Sounzan while offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Ashi.
At Owakudani, visitors can observe active volcanic steam vents rising from the ground and experience the distinctive smell of sulfur that naturally occurs in the area. Observation areas and walking paths near the station allow visitors to enjoy the unique volcanic scenery safely.
The area's most famous specialty is Kuro Tamago (Black Eggs), eggs boiled in natural volcanic hot spring water that turn black due to chemical reactions with minerals in the water. According to local legend, eating one black egg can add seven years to your life.
