Mount Fuji Officials Warn Against Dangerous Off-Season Climbing

Local officials renewed warnings after climbers continued attempting Mount Fuji outside the official season. Snow, freezing temperatures and strong winds make off-season climbing dangerous for visitors and rescue teams.

Officials around Mount Fuji renewed warnings in May 2026 about climbing outside the mountain's official summer season.

Although Mount Fuji may appear accessible from lower elevations, upper sections can remain covered by snow and ice well into spring. Weather can change rapidly, with strong winds, poor visibility and temperatures below freezing.

Off-season facilities are limited. Mountain huts, toilets, first-aid points and transport services may be closed, while trails may not be maintained. Mobile-phone reception and access to emergency assistance can also be unreliable.

Local authorities stressed that rescue operations place emergency workers at risk. Travellers should not interpret the absence of a physical barrier as permission or evidence that a route is safe.

The standard climbing season generally runs from early July until early September, but dates differ by trail and weather conditions. Visitors should check official Yamanashi or Shizuoka climbing information and use lower-elevation sightseeing areas when trails are closed.
